Rangipo Desert is an interesting place for a rambling hike - from the glacial moraines of Mangatoetoenui Glacier, subalpine vegetation, deposits from eruptions and lahars and the remains of trees felled by the great Taupo eruption 1792 years ago.
Join us as we explore the northern Rangipo. We hope for good views of Ruapehu and the Desert Road area. We expect to rub shoulders with the subalpine vegetation, investigate the various forms of eruption and lahar deposits and consider the extent to which sandy formations are due to erosion by wind, frost or human causes. We will drive drive up the Tukino mountain road to the crest of the moraine, then work our way down across the northern Rangipo and the Onetapu sands back to Waikato Stream.

Check, Clean, Dry to stop the spread
Getting outdoors is a fantastic way to explore New Zealand, but it's important to clean your boots and gear to prevent the spread of invasive weed species and pests like didymo that threaten our rivers, lakes, and native ecosystems. Always check your gear for seeds, cleaning and drying thoroughly after every use to help protect NZ’s great outdoors.
