Te Maari Eruption Landslide, Blast and Lahars

Discover the recovering vegetation in the blast zone of the last eruption of Tongariro in August 2012 with local volcanologist Dr Harry Keys.

This is the 2nd trip in a series of 3 volcanic based trips. We will hike up the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (TAC) past the site of the Ketetahi hut (now demolished after being “bombed” during the eruption). Then we will walk off-trail down through the blast zone to the site of the landslide that “uncorked” the eruption. The hike will also reveal the recent sequence of lahars (floods on volcanos) that affected the TAC since the eruption and earlier.

This is a difficult hike with long uphill sections. A very good level of fitness is required.
