Ruapehu Lahars Tramp - Explore Mt Ruapehu's Whangaehu Lahar

Discover the volcanic and glacial history of Mt Ruapehu on this mostly off- track hike.

After driving across the Rangipo Desert we will hike from Tukino Mountain Road on the Round The Mountain track to the Whangaehu River. We look at paths from the ancient Rangipo mega lahars, and the more recent (1995, 2007 x 2) lahar activity down the Whangaehu and at the site of the Bund (man-made barrier).

Local volcanologist Dr Harry Keys is your guide.
