Te Matapuna Wetland Wander 2024

Join local Project Tongariro conservation legends for a walk around the shores of south Lake Taupō's wonderful wetlands - Te Mātāpuna. Explore the 'kidneys of the lake' and learn about this unique landscape and its inhabitants.

Come and see how the area looks without invasive willows and understand the huge problems we face keeping them at bay! Bring shoes you won’t mind getting wet (or tall gumboots).

Trip length: 5hrs
Minimum Age: 12

Meeting Place: Meet at the Licorice Cafe, Motuoapa, SH1.

Grade: Grade 2-3, depending on the track
Transport: Own


Participants are asked to bring the following:

  • Gumboots / or shoes you’re ok with getting wet

  • Weather suitable clothing - ie waterproof and warm clothing if wet weather.

  • Packed lunch and water

  • Personal medication

  • Personal first aid kit

  • Insect repellent

  • Camera

  • Swimwear (if inclined!)

Please note: the Trip leader reserves the right to refuse anyone who is insufficiently equipped.

Cancellations dependent on weather. Trip leader will text cell phones before trip proceeds. Admin and booking fee is non-refundable in the event of cancellation.

If you cancel your trip before 48 hours of the trip date, a refund will be provided (excluding the $6 booking fee). For cancellations within 48 hours of the trip, no refunds are applicable.
