Avian Avoidance Training Taupō 2023

Kiwi and Whio Avoidance Training is a tool that helps reduce the threat that dogs can pose to our precious native birds when off lead.

It is ideal for hunting and farm dogs who are required to work in areas where kiwi and whio may be found.

Thanks to support from the Central North Island Sika Foundation this training is offered at only $10 per dog, instead of the standard $25. Places are limited so book early to avoid disappointment.

Owners of dogs trained will receive a free family pass to visit the Otorohanga Kiwi House, as a thank-you for your efforts to protect kiwi – these will be emailed to you following the training.

In the interest of safety, we ask for all dogs to be contained whilst they are waiting for their turn to be trained. Dogs are trained one at a time.

Trip length: 20 min per dog
Max Participants: 30 dogs
Meeting Place: Whakaipo Bay, Taupō. Meet near the entrance to the Guide Hall (on the left side of the bay as you drive in)
Cost: $10 per dog

Participants are asked to bring:

  • Any previous avian aversion certificates

  • Dog chip or registration number

Please note: the trip leader reserves the right to refuse anyone who is insufficiently equipped.

In the event of adverse weather, participants will be contacted 24 hours in advance and training will be postponed a week.
