EXclusive access through Poronui Station to oamaru hut, kaimanawa forest park
Listen to the Sika Foundation volunteer crew speak about the 'Boots on the Ground' conservation initiatives, ecosystem and game animal management; the Whio Recovery project and native species protection currently underway by the CNI Sika Foundation within the Kaimanawa Forest Park.
Poronui Station has partnered with the Sika Foundation to offer the general-public the first ever opportunity to travel by vehicle, rather than by the normal 12km poled walking access route through the station. Departing Taupo by bus, through Poronui Station to final drop off point at the Kaimanawa Forest Park boundary at the top of the Oamaru Valley.
Enjoy a short 40 minute scenic walk and cross the Kaipo River to the Oamaru Hut for a hot cuppa, Sika Foundation ‘Conservation Conversation’ before enjoying a leisurely few hours to yourself, find the perfect lunch spot and/or have explore along either of the Oamaru-Boyd or Kaipo-Cascade Tracks.
Cost: $25 per person
Trip Length: Approx 7 hours including 1.5 hours walking
Minimum Age: 5 Years (All children must be accompanied by an adult)
Maximum Participants: 20 (minimum of 10 people is needed for this trip to proceed, otherwise booked people will be fully refunded).
Meeting Place: Grass area behind the Z Tauhara Service Station - 200 Napier Road, Taupo @ 8.30am

Please note this is a Grade 4 walk with one river crossing.
Postponement date 17th January if forecast for poor weather. Other criteria for postponement / canceling include Covid-19 alert level increase.
