The Ruapehu Trail Festival 2023 Volunteers
The Ruapehu Trail Festival (umbrella name for the Tussock Traverse and Ring of Fire events) is going ahead on Saturday, 11 March 2023!! This is a big fundraising event for Project Tongariro and we’re looking for volunteers to cover the first shift/leg 3 for all marshals positions from Tukino Road right through to the Chateau Tongariro (which includes the Waihohonu Track marshals), along with 8-10 people to help run the BBQ at the Chateau Tongariro.
Volunteer Positions:
Project Tongariro BBQ Helper at Chateau Tongariro @ the Ruapehu Trail Festival (8-10 Volunteers)
Not required on the Friday however Friday night & Saturday night accommodation is available in Forest and Bird Lodge, Whakapapa if needed. On the Saturday the BBQ runs from 9.30am to late (potentially sundown) near the lawn on the Chateau Tongariro but set-up team will be required from approx. 7.30am onsite.
SHIFT ONE Leg 3 marshal @ the Ruapehu Trail Festival (40+ VOLUNTEERS)
Required to attend a briefing Friday early evening in Whakapapa. Approx. time 6pm.
Required to walk in/out from the Tukino Access Road/RTM Track (walking towards the Chateau Tongariro), OR
Required to walk in/out from the SH1/Waihohohu Track Intersection (walking towards the Chateau Tongariro), OR
Required to walk in/out from the Chateau Tongariro (via Upper or Lower Taranaki Falls Loop, walking towards Tukino)
Walk into the course on Friday evening and stay at the Waihohonu Hut (and then walk additional distance early Saturday), or walk in from respective entry points early Saturday (depending on exact position). Might be on the tracks as early as 0600hrs Saturday, and could be off track as late as 1700hrs Saturday. NOTE: Shift Two Marshals will be deployed from respective entry points Saturday afternoon to relieve the Shift One marshals so that all Shift One marshals can be off the tracks by 1700hrs. Accommodation provided Friday and Saturday night in Whakapapa (if not at a Hut).

Other
If you don't wish to be tied to a fixed marshal point or the BBQ the event does have some limited positions available that involve being an Active Tail End Charlie for a section and other roles that don't require you to go bush or be Active (i.e manning an Aid Station)
