Join us for an unforgettable weekend exploring the natural wonders of Moutohorā (Whale Island) and the stunning Ōhiwa region!
16–18 May 2025
Friday – Arrival & Relaxation
We’ll meet on Friday evening at Ōhiwa Harbour and kick off the weekend with legendary fish and chips from the Tio Ōhiwa Oyster Farm. We'll be staying in shared accommodation at two private homes in Ōhiwa ($40pp/night). Bring your own food, drink, bedding and clothing - and be ready to help tidy up on Sunday before we head home.
Saturday – Island Adventure & Local Connection
On Saturday, we head to Whakatāne for a guided tour of Moutohorā Island with Divework Charters. This 4-hour experience includes:
A scenic catamaran ride to the island
A visit to a kekeno/NZ fur seal colony
Birdlife encounters with tūturiwhatu, tīeke, kākāriki, tui and bellbirds
A swim at the secluded hot water beach, Onepū/Sulphur Bay
Digging your own hot pool in the sand (depending on the tide)!
Afterwards enjoy a walk on the beach or headland stroll in Ōhiwa. In the evening, we’ll gather for a potluck dinner and drinks, joined by special guest Andy Glaser, who will share the inspiring story behind the Ōhiwa Headland Sanctuary - a community project restoring native biodiversity to this unique coastal landscape.
Sunday – Scenic Journey Home
We’ll head home via SH30, with a few optional stops for those keen to explore more:
A guided visit to the mysterious Kaingaroa rock carvings
A short or long walk up Mt Kakaramea (Rainbow Mountain) - choose between a 30-minute crater lake stroll or a 1.5-hour summit climb
Or a more relaxing option, soak in the warm waters of Kerosene Creek
