Drive to Opepe Reserve, walk formed track past old redoubt site down old Napier-Taupo road (1870s to 1961/62) and on unformed trapping tracks with various relics and forest successions.
Then cross Highway 5 into main part old growth podocarp forest finishing at graveyard of soldiers killed in NZ Wars in 1869.
Trip Length: 4 hours including travel
Minimum Age: 8 with accompanying adult
Maximum Participants: 30. Minimum of 5 participants for the trip to take place.
Meeting Place: Z Tauhara Service Station, Napier Taupo Highway, near intersection with Taupo Bypass Highway
Transport: Own to meeting place, then can arrange car pools
Cost: Koha to Project Tongariro
Trip may be postponed/cancelled due to weather. Other conditions for cancellation/postponement include covid alert level changes.
Participants are asked to bring the following:
Waterproof and warm clothing
Tramping boots or track shoes
Sunglasses/sunscreen/sunhat
Snacks and Drinks
Personal first aid kit
Personal medication
Camera (optional)

Please find below important information regarding our policy under the Covid-19 Protection Framework. This policy is valid whether we are in red, orange, or green in the traffic light system.
All trips (except the Avian Aversion Training) will require attendees to wear a mask to the meeting point and show a valid vaccination passport. A DOC employee will cite vaccination passports at the meeting point on the day of your trip. These settings are to keep volunteers, staff, and attendees safe, as well as for the safety of the wider communities we operate in.
Avian Aversion Training attendees do not have to have a vaccination passport but must be wearing a mask.
All trip leaders are double vaccinated.
